Anyone do wood carving? What would be the best tools to use for what I’m wanting to do?
I want to car large and small wooden figures of historical people, cars, robots, spiders and insects, all kinds of things. Wondering what kind of wood I should use, size, and tools. Do you use a knife, chisels and a hammer, or both and other tools?
Also I try avoiding using power tools cause I feel it takes away from the experience and craftsmanship. And some of these I’d like to paint after I finish them. What would be the best paint and technique for painting them?
if you want to carve small things as stated then try using a good whittling knife as you can get into all the fiddly bits. You can also get little carving chisels which can be used in the same way as a knife. These aren’t expensive. You can also use small files to help shape your carving.
When looking at various woodcarving sites recently, one person used watercolor’s and acrylic varnish. I tried this on a walking stick that i made and it was not as successful as i had hoped. Another one used acrylic paint and acrylic varnish. As i tend to use acrylic for most of my work i think this sounds the best way but as of yet have not tried it on my own carvings.
