casting resin how to
How do I make a mold out of polystyrene/styrofoam shape?

Ok, so I’ve got a few shapes I’ve wittled out of Polystyrene/Styrofoam and I want to make a master mold out of them.

Ideally out of a decent rubber type material, so I can then use some sort of plaster or resin to cast multiples of the shape.

So I need to know how to make the master mold, and what materials to use to.

Hope someone can help!!

Ok, you need to go to Wal-Mart, sorry!! :) You need to get 100% silicone used for caulking, get quite a few. Then on the same aisle or close to it buy Devcon 2 Ton epoxy, 8 hour set only. DO NOT buy fast setting epoxy, you will be wasting your money! It will cause tons of bubbles to cloud the epoxy and may comprimise the surface of the piece, trust me. Then go find a Tuuperware style storage container that will fit your models with plently of clearance above and below the surface of it. You will also need something to prop the model up off the bottom of the container with that will be inconspicous as a belly button/mold line on the finished cast piece. Then get some cooking spray like Pam as a release for the epoxy from the silicone. May take a few trys to get the mold cut away properly, but it always does. Refer to this webpage for visuals of the whole process but ignore the materials for now and use what I mentioned first. The stuff the are using looks like two part silicone, which is pretty costly unless you are getting a bunch of it.

Now maybe you can help with my question :)
