Investment / Lost Wax Casting Question?
I recently cast my 9-month pregnant belly and hands using an alginate and plaster mold. I popped out the cooled wax today and noticed some tiny pits in my hands. I am afraid that if I try to fix them, I will lose a lot of detail or accidentally get drips running down my hands. I am new to working with wax, but I know the bronze casting process well. Any tips or techniques?
Thanks!
Rig up a soldering iron to a lamp dimmer, like this http://www.mikegigi.com/castgobl.htm#WAXWELD and you can modify one as I did or just use it as is. By cutting back the temperature, you have much more control of the wax. As you probably know, it is much easier to remove flaws from the wax than from the bronze. If you are familiar with bronze, I have to assume you did sand casting or someone else did the waxes. Practice on something else first, perhaps a wax of just a section. You will also want to use care in attaching vents so their removal is as simple and clean as possible.
