Would plaster work to make a mold for tin?
I want to make a metal ornamental plate for a friend, I made a wax model and tried twice to make a clay mold around it (intending to melt the wax out once the mold is ready) but the clay keeps breaking apart when it dries, it apparently isn’t good for this use.
It would be easy to make a mold out of plaster, but will it resist the heat? It has to resist wax being melted out, the remainder scraped off as well as possible, then molten tin poured in (about 300 Celsius) If it breaks before it’s set, it has to be started over from scratch, since the model is destroyed while making the mold.
Is there another option using easy to find materials? I didn’t try mixing fibers with clay to support it yet, do you think that would work?
go to riogrande.com and look for something called “investment” it’s what is used for lost wax castings. its tough to work with but its made for casting at high temps
