the creation of an art project continent?

im setting up a continent for a school project and have to create a model. im not sure what material should I use to sculpt the continent. Does anyone have a suggestion to carve a material to make a continent? that can not be too heavy because I have to take to school. It must also be easy to mold and paint / color. if you could please send me an account of the material and tell a shop where you can buy. Additionally, if you have any homemade recipes to create a clay-like material, which would be much appreciated.

If you use paper mache or plaster of Paris will have to use a base coat of plaster or (from the art / craft stores) or a manual (in hardware or paint stores). Art / Craft stores in your area also have various types of clay can be used for this project.
