What is an oil-based clay?
I need what is called “oil-based” clay for sculpting an armature of a human head so I can make a plaster mold out of it and eventually a latex mask but, I cant find any clay that says “Oil-based” on its package at ALL and its driving me nuts. I bought an air-dry clay but I dont know if thats the right stuff. I have access to Joann Fabric and Micheals arts and craft stores so if anyone knows what type of clay is oil-based please let me know!!
Thankyou!
I had the best answer for you last night, but my computer froze up at the last second & cut me off. =( GAAAWWWWD!
Anyways, most local art supply stores will carry oil based clay. I love “Roma” which you can get in 2 lb bricks of varying softness (I like medium). I love JoAnn’s & Michael’s but I’m not sure they carry oil-based clay. You can call them & ask first, if not try your local art stores. You may have to purchase it on-line, if you do you can Google “Sculpting supplies” but I’d suggest DickBlick’s art supplies, they offer tons of art materials including oil based clays, here’s their link to their Roma clay: http://www.dickblick.com/products/sculpture-house-roma-plastilina-modeling-clay
It might be expensive to ship, but they’re fast & they are great to work with, plus their prices are decent, usually cheaper then elsewhere. I can get a brick of Roma at my art supply store for about $11, Dickblick carries it for about $8-$9. & they often have sales too.
If you’re beginning in sculpture, I would suggest getting a book at the library about armatures & mold making, the process you’re describing is very tedious & complicated, not impossible, just takes a lot of know-how & there are a lot of books that are helpful.
Also, air drying clay won’t work. My very first sculpture I ever did (20 years ago) I used air-drying clay & it fell apart on me. I was so bummed that it took me another 2 years before I attempted sculpture again. I used OIl base clay that time & I got hooked!
Have fun!
