polymer clay sculpting
What is a good material for sculpting?

What materials does Patricia Piccinini, and Takashi Murakami ,, Use to make their sculptures..
I have read that its a polymer clay but it doesnt look like it.. or is it just a really high quality brand?

What ever it is where can you purchase it?

If you go to this page http://www.patriciapiccinini.net/ , click on the figure with the large belly in mid screen and move a mouse over the small images an Alt label will appear that gives the sculpture’s name and materials used in standard art format. Both say “silicone … fiberglass” among other things. Cast silicon is the same as Ron Mueck does with his large (and small figures) Silicone casting rubber is a two part material that ends up soft and skin like and is basically pink so easy to make more skin like.
Please understand that it is NOT “a good material for sculpting” because you don’t sculpt in it – you do the sculpting in clay – probably plasticine oil based modeling clay – then you make a mold of that and cast the silicone liquid into the mold and assemble it. There used to be a video of Ron Mueck’s work but last time I checked my link it had been pulled.
You buy silicone casting rubber from commercial casting materials and artist supply firms.
