sculpting clay tutorials
Any video tutorials or general tips that would help me with sculpting my life size(ish) female torso from cl?

I’m going to be sculpting a life size or rather large female torso using clay and I’m looking for tips or tutorials on how to do so. Any videos on the web I could watch?

I’m not sure, but I thought I heard of something called “coiling” to make a sculpture but I am not sure on how to do so.

Any tips or advice or links would be helpful. Thanks!

You are working bigger than I work. Coiling would be a possibility.

I would probably start by rolling out some slabs of clay about 1/2 to 3/8 inch thick. Maybe set up the clay ext-ruder to extrude some coils. I would choose big hole or maybe do some with a ribbon

I hope you have done some other work with clay and know some of these basics

To join clay if it is soft enough it can be pressed together and worked.

When the clay drys some you need to score and slip the clay – ruff up both surfaces and add some slime made from the clay you are using.

Clay shrinks as it dries. It also becomes stiffer. You will be doing a dance letting the clay dry for stronger and spraying with water to balance being able to manipulate the clay.

You want to try for an even thickness. Avoid trapping air if you are going to have the piece fired in the kiln.

I also wrap pieces with plastic bags and plastic wrap to control moisture loss. Near the end if it dries too fast there will be a lot of cracks

You can see some of my pieces at my blog. I marked it for adult content. If you are doing a torso, this content is a tame version of what can be seen in a public art museum http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-DG8Czsshd6eGmE__oNYn.g–;_ylt=AjyvO5u8RzIApRVpjnU3WV6qAOJ3?cq=1
