What is involved in building a fireplace with chimney in an existing home?

I have lots of questions concerning this. I have a corner that I would like to install a chimney with mantle and stone fireplace. I am very handy and as long as I have what the requirements would be as far as code and detailed instructions I can do it. I have alot of stone from a building on our farm that was torn down that for nostalgic reasons I would like to use. I would like for the mantle to be a hand carved peice. How big or little should the chimney dimensions be..what is the trick to building a chimney with good draw. Does anyone recommend any do it yourself kits? Are there masonry brick that are prelined? or should that be totally separate? Looking forward to everyone’s ideas?

If you diy, the metal fireplace and chimney is the way to go. Stone facing can be added as a surround, faux brick interiors are available. Places like Menards sell it all. A real stone fireplace would require a foundation into the ground to support the weight.
