Sculptures of India

It was from the time of Indus valley civilization that the great story of India’ art and sculpture began. Since then they have quite brilliantly complimented the rich history of the country. Sculptures found here are one of the oldest in the entire world. They tell the magical story of India’s rich history and glory days of the earlier era. They are well spread throughout the country with presence in every nook and corner. These magnificent sculptures can be found in the temples, caves and historical monuments.

Three of the important religions of world that is Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism originated from India. On carefully studying various sculptures, one will find that these three religions have been extensively painted. Sculptures found in the caves of Ajanta and Ellora effortlessly describe the peaceful existence of Hindus, Buddhists and Jain’s. Various techniques used for the sculpture have kept on changing from one centuries to another. In India sculptures have been drawn using stone or rock, wood, bronze metal, bone and marbles. Of all the most popular material used for sculpturing in India are stone, metal and wood which include oak, box and terracotta. There is lot of spirituality and mysticism involved with the Indian sculptures. They are the true representative of the Indian arts. Most of the sculptures are either religious base or historical one.

Temple Sculptures of India

India boasts of stunning temples and stupas which signifies both spiritual and architectural brilliance. This country has always prided about its secular nature and various religious sculpture prove them true. The most significant being the one found in the caves of Ajanta and Ellora. In these caves there are beautiful sculptures of Hindus, Buddhist and Jain at the same site, which show that secularism existed in country since early days. Though different types of temple sculpture exist in the country, the most popular are Nagara (North India) and Dravidian (South India) style of sculpture. Most of these temples follow a particular style of architectures.

The common architectural element of these temples include garbhagrihas, Vimanas, Mandapas, miniature towers, pillars, etc. Among the temples of southern India, Kirtimukhus, are the common architectural elements. It include double mandapas and drilled pillars. During the time of Cholas and Chalukyas kingdom, there was temple sculpture revolution in south India. The beautifully sculptured temples like Meenakshi and Shiva located in temple town of Madurai are an example of the sculptural brilliance of southern India. Some of popular sculpture temple of India are Konark, Akshardam, Khajuraho. Jagannath, etc. There are some popular Buddhists sculptures in Sarnath and Sanchi. These sculpture were believed to have been built during time of king Ashoka. The famous stupa located is Sanchi is one of renowned surviving sculpture of the Mauryan empire.

Historical sculptures

The sculptural history of India takes us back to Indus valley civilization. This period is often considered as the golden period of the India’s art and sculpture. Various items excavated from this area show that people from that era were admirers of fine arts like dancing, paintings and carving sculptures. Some of the important sculptures excavated from this valley are bronze and stone sculpture, pillars, shell objects, etc. The most prominent sculpture are that of a priest in limestone and bronze dancing girl.

The other popular historical sculptures sites found in India are Harappa and Mohenjo-daro civilization. Large number of arts based on the Hindu religion have been found there. These two civilization are also one of the oldest in the world. Many other materials found like utensils, knife, pots, etc speaks about the advance lifestyle of people from that era. Most of historical sculptures are either rock cut sculpture or marble sculptures.

Popular Sculptures of India

There are innumerable number of sculptures located all over the India. Today these sculptures have become one of the most important travel attractions of the country. These sculptures are mostly based on the religions. Buddhist sculpture of Sarnath and Sanchi are world famous. The caves of Ajanta and Ellora also house some stunning Buddhist sculptures. They all depict the story of Buddhists growth in the country. Hindu and Jain sculptures too have found their way in these caves.

The sculptures of Khajuraho are the most famous in India. Unlike the other temples of India, there are lot of erotic sculptures in the numerous temples of the Khajuraho. Built by Chandela rulers, there use to be originally 85 temples but today only 22 of them stand. Sculptures in Khajuraho comprise of the statue of gods and goddesses, warriors, dances, animals and that of the couples in the erotic posses. Elephanta caves located nearby Mumbai house some intricately carved temples. There are creatively carved images of lord Shiva in different forms.
