Undoubtedly the biggest attraction for most visitors to Easter Island head is huge – the most notable of these are carved monoliths from compacted volcanic ash. , The moai, which are distributed throughout the Easter Island and are in fact enlarged heads attached to small torsos with the latter regularly buried, leaving only the face visible. Almost all the 887 moai were toppled in tribal wars in the 18th and 19th centuries and it took until the 1950s that a concerted effort to maintain extensive excavations started after the explorer Thor Heyerdahl.
There is much to do regarding the moai, starting with the quarry from which were extracted and all carved Rano Raraku. Here is clear evidence of the tool used to cut the head – simple stone chisels – and a large number of Moai, which have never left the quarry. In fact, only one quarter of those engraved never done the installation and it is estimated that it took six men a year carving the place.
Discovered and named Easter Sunday 1722 – by the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen – Easter Island is a territory of Chile, but it located about 2,300 kilometers west of South America.
