Organic furniture project, what tools do i need?
I’m in the process of designing some organic looking “blob like” furniture for a summer project and would like to know what kind of tools i should use to get the desired rounded effect when working with oak (or other woods). I know that for fine tuning i can use files and sanders, but what is my best bet for starting out? I would basically be carving out of a large block of wood.
I would say that, depending on how large the block of wood is that you’re starting out with and what it is you’re making, you might want to start out with something like a chain saw (one of the smaller ones) that will help you get through a bunch of wood quickly to rough out the shape you’re trying to achieve. After that, reciprocating saws and other power tools (you can even use a power drill with something like a Forstner bit) and chisels to further define the shape. After that, you could use something like drawknives and rasps, then your files and sanders. Sounds intriguing! I’d love to see pictures when you complete your project. Be sure to save the shavings and compost them!
