can anyone give me some advice on how to carve wood with chisels and knives as a hobby?
Step one is to get some reliable wood for easy learning – for most people this is basswood which is available in assortment packs at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc. Step two is to learn how to sharpen your tools because dull tools don’t cut evenly and slip and cut you when too much force is used to compensate. One way to get started is to visits various “wood carving tools” sites and note the names and then look up those names and understand what they do. Another way is to buy a basic kit, perhaps like this one http://www.dickblick.com/products/carving-chisel-set/ which gives you stones matched to the tools (cheaper are available) and work to get a feel for using them.
