Technique for use of Great Stuff foam on the inside boat?

We have a sailboat steel insulated removable styrofoam against the hull. However, without isolating the space exists in long narrow areas between the wooden slats in the ribs of the hull and the hull itself. We would like to use spray foam Great things to fill this space, but ask for suggestions on how to accomplish this. Would rather spray before replacing polystyrene foam pieces larger, because otherwise the spray foam would be more or less cement the pieces in place, making it difficult hull inspection later. Spray and then carve when is wet it is likely that compromises the insulating properties. On the other hand, cutting overflow after drying can damage our newly painted interior. Any suggestions as to how to make an effective application of spray foam?

If I were to do this I would put the paper in sytrofoam and where the great material is going to go. The paper Styrofoam protect and allow removed for inspection. Glue the paper down before using the spray. Regards, Dan
